It hurts when I do that!

I hear ya!  Check out the video and you'll catch a glimpse of some of the injuries I've acquired over the years.

Having the want and the drive to move forward is key to your success.
Can you work around your injuries?  Most likely!  I would, as your trainer, always have you check with your Doctor, Physical Therapist or other medical professional to guide or authorize the exercise program that you participate in.  Being able to move is that important.
Exercise has helped decrease many of my symptoms.
If you are dealing with injury or another medical condition, check with your doctor.  Take the little steps to better your health.  You'll be amazed at how you'll feel.

I'm really normal!

Seems funny to me to join an exercise class and push and sweat like most the others in attendance.  Yet comments to me seem to be the same.
"This is easy for you." or "You should be able to pull that off, you're in shape."
Well, allow me to give you a little back ground on myself.
I was born in 1959 (but if you ask my dad he says that they found me under a rock.  Dad is always good for a story.) and if you were to see the family movies taken of me you would see first that it was an effort to even try to stay sitting up.  Picture the "Weebles wobble" but I fell down.   As time went on I found my love for food was more powerful than the want to be active.  I did love hide and go seek.  That's one game I could go hide and just sit and wait.  I jokingly blame my moms bloodline for my love of food being that she's from Hawaii.
"What's the difference between an Oriental and a Hawaiian?  Orientals eat till they are full, Hawaiians eat till they are tired!"
Boy did I live up to that.
Coming up through school I always carried enough fat on my body to hate having my shirt off.  Of course it seemed that during P.E. I found myself on the teams that were "skins" or among the "Fat Man's Race." Ugh!
Through a short stint in High School Football (which I sustained a couple of compression fractures in my back) and years of Polynesian Dance my legs became the strongest part of me.  Eating still over rode my desires.
I was thin for a short time of my life when I was sent to Hawaii, Guam and Yap (an island in Micronesia) on church assignment.  I left at 5'10", 235 pounds and came home 2 years later at 6'1", 178 pounds.  I found that I had also lost a tremendous amount of strength.  Noted when my sisters were able to drag me around, literally, while I struggled to free myself.  That just wasn't right!
Now to make a long story a bit shorter.
Happily married, over time, I let myself get to over 300 pounds.  My belly was hanging over a 50" waist pants.  I felt horrible and would drown my frustrations with a bag of chocolate kisses or find myself at the shopping mall following the smell of cinnamon and sugar just to purchase not one but two of those lovely rolls and eating it myself.  Just to feel my pants get tighter.  Emotional eater? Yup.
Fast forward.
Due to an accident my son had when he was about 7, I was introduced to the Physical Therapy world.  We had some older friends that had a son that just opened up his own office and after time I went to work for him.  This was the point that I really started to learn about the body. That was 1989.
So here we are.  Why do I share this with you?  I want you to know that I have had and still have struggles with my health just like you.  I may have different weaknesses and challenges, being physical or emotional, than you but they are just that, challenges.
Here I post and extend to you this challenge.
No matter where you're at in your life right now, do you feel that you could be healthier and in better shape than you are?  Are you ready to do something about it starting now?  If you are, then join me as I go for the best shape in my life.  I'd love to have you along for the ride and to hear your story as we make this journey together.
This is what you need to do.
First, record your weight and body fat percentage.  The best way to get body fat measured is to find some place that does the BodPod, the water tank or the easiest and cheapest way to measure is to get someone that is adept with the pinch calipers.
Second, measure the following areas:  Mid calf, mid thigh, hips, waist (do not just use pants size), chest (measure under the arms and around chest), shoulders (around arms and chest) and mid upper arm.
Third, record your clothes size.
Now what is your desired goal?  Not sure?  Talk to me!
Ready to start?
Here is my current body fat percentage.  I won't bore you with the other details.
March 31, 2011
Body Fat: 19 percent (My highest was about 38%)
I've set up a 6 month goal that by the middle of September I will be at 10 percent body fat.  From time to time I will let you know where I'm at.
Who's with me?
You are who I am accountable to.
I am really normal, just like you.

This Secret

Magic Potion?  Silver Bullet?  The Big Secret?

All this searching to find the next big thing in losing body fat.

You’ve heard it all and depending on your age you’ve seen a lot of gadgets out there.  I remember the belt that was attached to a machine and the individual would step into the loop of the belt, lean back, turn on the machine and let the jiggle begin!!  As a kid, I found it more fun to talk while it was shaking me around.  Oh yes, I jiggled and giggled but looking back on those events found that neither I nor the adults around me dropped any weight, but I digress.

So what about that Magic Potion?  Is there such a thing yet?  I’d love to be able to take that pill that would allow me to drop my body fat level to my ideal percentage, to increase my strength and allow me to look like I’m 25 again (including hair on my head)!

There is a key element out there that is all around us that will help!  It’s inexpensive and we have access to it almost all of our waking hours!  I’ve even seen this element touted as The Big Secret, the Secret Weapon to fat loss:
“All you have to do is click on the big yellow button below and you will have access to this all powerful tip!  But hurry!
We are only allowing the next 500 people access!”
Then you pay them a dollar and it routes you to a page that shares the secret.
Well here is that secret:
Drink More Water!

That’s right, drink more water.  Now before you go off rolling your eyes and telling yourself and me that you drink plenty of water, let me ask you this………
…How much do you actually drink?  Give me your answer in total ounces, pints, quarts and even gallons!  You don’t get to count coffee, tea, or soda (I hope soda is not part of your daily nutrition).  The caffeine actually acts as a diuretic and doesn’t help in your body’s hydration.

First, let’s take a quick look at a basic function of your liver.  One of the jobs it has is to convert stored fat to energy!  But, it also picks up the slack for the kidneys when there’s not enough water for the kidneys to function properly.  If the kidneys are water deprived then the liver has to pick up their job and in turn doesn’t work on metabolizing our stored body fat as efficiently as when the kidneys are pulling their own weight.  Don’t let that happen, you’ll be setting yourself up for fat storage.

So you don’t like water for ANY reason.  No taste, boring, hate running to the bathroom so often.  Make it tasty!!  Add a little lemon, lime or even a berry or two!  Now about running to the restroom - it’s true!  You will run off to the potty more often at first and here’s why:  The body is flushing itself out.  As you continue to give your body all the water it could ask for, it gets rid of what it doesn’t need.  It releases the water in your ankles, hips, thighs, and perhaps around your belly!  After a few days the body will realize that it doesn’t have to store water, trusting that water will continue coming and eventually the frequent visits to the restroom will cease.

Water is great for your skin too!  It flushes out impurities, makes skin look younger and improves muscle tone.  While you are working out water will enable muscles to contract easier making the workout more effective.

How much water do you need?  Eight 8 ounce glasses every day?  Really?    That’s not that much if you total it out.  It equates to 2 Quarts of water!  Certainly each of us is different.  How hard you train, your body mass, etc.

Today’s homework for you………….start carrying a water bottle with you.  Keep track of how many times you empty that bottle into your body.  As you increase the intake of water your body will function better and you just may have found that magic potion to assist you in losing that body fat!
